This plant is originally from South Africa but found its way in gardens all over the world due to its beauty. There are several species of Strelitzia. The long green leaves are similar to those of banana trees. In fact some Strelitzia speices are called wild bananas. The name Strelitzia derives from the region of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, where Queen Charlotte of England came from.
