LILIUM AURATUM LILIUM KUBBUM SOME GOOD LILIES J ^ILIES have always been regarded as among the most lovely flowers of the garden. In late June after Irises and Peonies have passed away the beautiful flowers of hardy Lilies impart new life and a second crop of bloom to herbaceous borders and among shrubbery. (For an example see illustration on page 37.) In such situations Lilies grow luxuriantly as they are benefited by the shade afforded by surrounding plants. Once established, they become a permanent and attractive feature. The best time to set out hardy Lilies is in Speciosum Rubrum. This variety is largely grown for cut November. Those offered on this page, planted out during the flowers and for garden adornment it is one of the best in our early spring months, should bloom the same sea- son. There are a number of other popular Lilies which must be secured and put into the soil in the fall; they cannot be furnished at any other time. Among such are Candidum (St. Joseph's Lily), Harrisi and Longiflorum (Easter Lilies), and others. The latter-named varieties are of- fered in our autumn catalog published each year in September, Lilies thrive best in a well-dug, rich, moist soil. Deep planting is recommendedâat least six inches deep for most, and more than that for the Speciosum varieties. All Lilies form two sets of rootsâone set below and the other above the bulb. For best effects place the bulbs in clumps of six or more; lay them on their sides with at least an inch of sand beneath, over, and around each one, then cover with soil. Although these Lilies are generally known as hardy, it is advisable to cover the surface with leaves or litter in late fall as a protective measure against frost. Beautiful Japan Lilies Auratum (Golden Japan Lily). Unsurpassed for garden culture, a most prolific
