British bread line. Women and children waiting in a breadline in England during the First World War (1914-1918). One of the strategies employed by the combatant nations was to target shipping supplies of food, raw materials and other supplies. Germany engaged in submarine warfare (the U-boat Campaign) that lead to food rationing in the UK. A system of convoys was established that ensured the UK would not run short of supplies. In contrast, the blockade on Germany caused severe food shortages by the end of the war, contributing to Germany's defeat.
