Preston Somers Expedition, Capture of Caracas, 1595
Original illustration from British Battles on Land and Sea circa 1880. According to the text the raiding party was guided by a Spanish prisoner who was to be rewarded for his treachery with freedom. Later Preston & Somers became convinced that the Spanish were acting dishonourably during a parley for the return of the city, and so enraged they burned it to the ground, leaving it in ruins.
