Light micrograph of two apposed folia of the cerebellar cortex showing the molecular layer (yellow) and the adjacent granular layer with many nuclei of granular neurons stained black. The extraordinary arborizing morphology of the dendrites of Purkinje neurons is shown by the deposition of metallic silver stain. Each Purkinje cell is estimated to have 100,000 synapses with other neurons and glial cells in the molecular layer. Paraffin section, silver stain. Magnification: x 250 when width printed at 10cm.
