Dr Edward Wilson (1872 - 1912) - a member of Robert Scott's Terra Nova Expedition that perished after reaching the South Pole.

Vintage photo of English Antarctic explorer Dr Edward Adrian Wilson (1872 - 1912) - a member of Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition that perished while returning from the South Pole. Wilson, known affectionately as "Uncle Bill", was a noted physician, naturalist, painter and ornithologist who accompanied Captain Scott on two Antarctic expeditions. He acted as junior surgeon, zoologist and artist on Scott's Discovery Expedition (also known as the British National Antarctic Expedition) of 1901 - 1904 and was Chief of the Scientific Staff on the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910 - 1913. Scott, Wilson, Captain Lawrence "Titus" Oates, Lieutenant Henry Robertson "Birdie" Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans famously reached the geographic South Pole in January 1912 but found that Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by just over a month. All five men perished on the return journey. Wilson is pictured in 1911 standing at the entrance to a hut at the expedition's winter quarters at Cape Evans, Ross Island.
