Ravenna: the remains of the palace of Theodoric (VII-VIII century)

Archaeologists have disagreed on the origin of this ruined structure; some believe it is the façade of the 9th century Church of San Salvatore ai Calchi, but others say it was built in the 8th century as a military headquarters (perhaps it was both, one after the other?). Although the first theory is better established, this structure is nowadays erroneously known as il Palazzo di Teodorico (Palace of Theodoric) because it is located on the site of the lost Ostrogothic palace. Excavations on the site and nearby have uncovered some beautiful marble and mosaic floors, thought to belong to the chambers of the Palace itself. These 5th century mosaics are on display within the two floors of the ruined structure, which makes it well worth a visit. The palace is located on Via di Roma, a short distance from Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, which had been built as the palace chapel.
