Donated blood. Sealed bag with 475 millilitres (standard collected volume) of fresh blood and sample tubes (centre right). The blood in the tubes is tested for diseases such as malaria and hepatitis, which can survive the processing that donated blood goes through, and therefore could be transmitted to a patient. Donor blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgical procedures or after accidents.
