Works of Edmund Spenser, Title Frontispiece

Entitled: "The works of Mr. Edmund Spenser. In six volumes. With a glossary explaining the old and obscure words. Publish'd by Mr. Hughes, 1715. Edmund Spenser (1552 or 1553 - January 13, 1599) was an English poet best known for The Faerie Queene, an epic poem and fantastical allegory celebrating the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I. He is recognized as one of the premier craftsmen of Modern English verse in its infancy, and is often considered one of the greatest poets in the English language. He published numerous relatively short poems in the last decade of the 16th century, almost all of which consider love or sorrow. In 1591, he published Complaints, a collection of poems that express complaints in mournful or mocking tones. In 1595, he published Amoretti and Epithalamion. This volume contains 89 sonnets commemorating his courtship of Elizabeth Boyle. His castle at Kilcolman was burned, one of his infant children may have died in the blaze. He died in 1599 at the age of 46. His coffin was carried to his grave in Westminster Abbey by other poets, who threw many pens and pieces of poetry into his grave with many tears.
