Common in shaded marshy places. I have yet to see any plants with leaves as broadly cordate-ovate as are fig-ured in the Bryologia Europea ( ). A rather narrow-leaved form commonin swampy shaded places, on the Atlantic coast at least, has been referred toCampylium chrysophyllum and to C. radicale, from both of which it clearly differsin its non-decurrent, non-clasping leaf base. Similar F^uropean forms are referredto Kochii by the best authorities. It has also been referred to J.
