Iraq: 'Two Doctors Preparing Medicine'. Single leaf from the Arabic version of Dioscorides' De Materia Medica, 1224 CE Two doctors are preparing medicine. A funnel is set on a tripod over a vessel. The two physicians preparing the medicinal draught stand on either side of the tripod beside two fruit trees. The text is written in Arabic naskhi script in brownish-black and red ink. Pedanius Dioscorides (Greek: Πεδάνιος Διοσκουρίδης; c. 40-90 CE) was a Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, the author of a 5-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances.
