May 20, 2006 - Salt storm blowing across the once mighty Amu Darya river near the Uzbek town of Nukus in Karakalpakstan. Cotton irrigation in the Uzbek and Turkmen deserts is responsible for a gradual decline of the river, which in turn carries less and less water to the Aral Sea in Northern Uzbekistan.
