Scottish Hydro-electric power station in Bearreraig Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK
Photo shows the Storr Lochs Hydro-Electric power station near Portree on the Isle of Skye. The building houses three 800KW hydro-electric turbines/alternators that are powered by water piped down the cliffs from the dam on Loch Leathan (one of the Storr Lochs) at the top of the cliffs, some 150m above. The two large pipes pipes that supply the water can be seen in the foreground. This was Skye's first proper power station, opened in 1952, at which time it could meet the energy needs of the entire Island and provided electricity to many islanders for the first time, causing great excitement. Now this station is connected into a wider electricity supply network which covers Northern Scotland and the turbines are switched on as required by that network. Skye's requirements have risen threefold and are also drawn from the same network.
