Bentonite clay mounds in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA. Bentonite clays are formed from the weathering of volcanic ash and come in 2 principal classes: sodium and calcium bentonite. Due to their excellent colloidal and absorbent properties Bentonite clays have a wide range of uses in the oil and gas industries, and iron and steel production. They are also used for decolourising mineral, vegetable and animal oils as well as clarifying alcoholic drinks and vinegar.
