The foliage in spring is deep purple, and later in the season changes to crimson, and again to a dull purplish green in the fall. $ to $ var. purpurea major. An erect, rapid grower; leaves large, shining and very dark purple. $ var. purpurea Riversii. Kiver's Smooth-leaved Purple Beech. This variety, which we procured of Mr. Rivers, differs from the ordinary Purple- leaved Beech by its compact, symmetrical habit of growth, and crimson foliage early in the spring, changing to a dark purple in summer. A beautiful variety, with gold-blotched leaves like the Japan Aucuba. As the variegation is per- manent, the tree is valuable for grouping with purple leaved trees.
