Lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera) is an aquatic plant of the genus Nelumbo, popularly known as lotus, lotus flower, Indian lotus and Indian lotus, it is part of the Nelumbonaceae (Proteales) family. It is a plant native to Asia, inhabitant of slow water courses or freshwater lakes, living at shallow depths. The flowers, seeds, young leaves, and "roots" (rhizomes) of this lotus species are edible. Religious Symbolism: Its symbolism is one of its most appreciated virtues: it is associated with spiritual purity and rebirth. One of the most beautiful flowers, it is born in the middle of the mud, inspiring a path of purification and transcendence in relation to everything that is considered impure in the world. In Buddhism, Buddha is symbolized in statues on a lotus flower, referring precisely to this idea of the transcendence of the common world (represented by the mud, the slime), that is, enlightenment in the face of mental confusion (duality of mind). "Lotus Flower" is also the name of a meditation posture where the practitioner sits cross-legged and the soles of the feet facing upwards.
