Otto Furst von Bismarck (1815-1898) was a German statesman and creator of the German Empire. He was called the "Iron Chancellor." This image is based on a photo taken by Loescher and Petsch in Berlin and is from a German book published in 1899. Bismarck allied Germany with Austria in 1879, Germany with Italy in 1882. He also conciliated Russia. Thus he acted as an arbiter of Europe.
