News reaches mo that in a library consist-ing of some 860 volumes housed at a baee campin France, and compiled by the Rev. WilliamBeveridge, , New Deer, the first bookaske-l for was Mr Richards popular work,entitled In a Deep Water Ship. By hisliterary gifts Mr Richards is tonus becomingwidely known and appreciated both at home andabroad. Many works, I am sure, will be lookedforward to from the 6ame authors gracefulpen. LV—WEST UNITED FREE West Church. The history of this congregation as aseparate body, although comparativelybrief, has not been uneventful. The Westis, of course, one of the Disruptionchurches, dating its existence from thestirring times of 1843, when Aberdeen hadmore than its own share of ecclesiasticalturmoil. From 1836 the most influentialminister in Aberdeen had been the Dyce Davidson, of the WestParish, and when he resolved to cast in hislot with Dr. Chalmers and his colleagues,it was not surprising that he had a largefollowing in his congregation. Accord-ingly, when the decisive hour came, therewas a big exodus from the West ParishChurch, and those who comprised it werethe founders of what is known to-day asthe West United Free Church. The first difficulty confronting those who came out was to secure temporaryaccommodation for continuing the churchservices. After some negotiation, thehomeless worshippers found a hospitablewelcome
