Closeup of a red-breasted sapsucker, gripping the rough bark of a tree and using its tail to brace itself as it searches for insects in the crevices.

The red-breasted sapsucker is a medium-sized woodpecker that lives on the Pacific coast an adjacent forests of North America, from SE Alaska to Northern California. They can be found year-round in coastal British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. Unlike many other woodpeckers, sapsuckers require living trees to feed, drilling small holes from which to gather sap and the insects attracted to it.
