A Victorian engraving of British wrong-doers being punished by being placed in the stocks. Once, almost all towns and villages had this method of punishment for drunks, vagrants and general troublemakers. Stood at the back can be seen the local beadle or constable with his staff of office, the man, responsible for making arrests.
