Randolph Churchill as a Roman soldier Churchillius, riding his horse retrenchment on a bed of popularity. 1887 Punch cartoon

Original Cartoon from Punch Magazine 12 February 1887 by John Tenniel (1820-1914). Punch cartoon speculating on Churchill's likely re-appearance. Churchill had resigned as Chancellor claiming Salisbury had failed to support him in cabinet, as opposition grew to his reduced Army estimates. it's widely believed he expected the cabinet to capitulate to his demands & to return in glory. In reality his career in mainstream politics was over.
