Holland Farm Horse engine house or horse mill tramp, Papa Westray, Orkney. The geared mechanism drove a threshing machine in the adjacent building.


The round building housed a horse powered geared mechanism that drove the threshing machinery in the adjacent barn. The circular shape allowed the horse to walk in a circle. Disused when photo taken in July 1987, now forms part of the Holland Farm Museum. Part of the Traill family estate farm, an extensive, mid 19th century, well organised complex with farmyard and buildings inc. horse-engine house Holland (houlland) means high land from the Old Norse hó land: given to the principal farm set on the highest part of the agricultural land.
