Two publicity posters, produced by the New Zealand Cancer Society, advocating protection from sunlight. At left is a poster suggesting the planting of trees to provide shade, at right it is suggested that people stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm each day. This education programme was instigated following concerns of increased ultraviolet light reaching the country as the Antarctic ozone 'hole' increases. The ozone layer naturally filters the high-energy UV-B wavelengths from sunlight, but ozone depletion allows more UV- B to reach the surface. UV-B is thought to increase incidence of skin cancer, severe sunburn, damage to the cornea and conjunctivitis.
