Lychnis (Lychnis yunnanensis)

The genus Lychnis (‘Campion’, ‘Catchfly’, ‘Maltese Cross’) belongs to the Family Caryophyllaceae and contains some extremely hardy herbaceous perennials with bright, attractive flowers that even the worst ‘brown thumb’ gardener can grow. The name Lychnis was used by Theophrastus and originates from the Greek word ‘lychnos’ meaning a lamp. This alludes either to the bright red flowers of some species or the use of the woolly-leaved species as wicks in lamps.
