Grand Prismatic Spring and Excelsior Geyser flocked with tourists seen from a nearby hill in the south.

The Grand Prismatic Spring is approximately 110 meter in diameter and is 50 meter deep. The spring discharges an estimated 2000 liter of 70 °C water per minute. The vivid colors in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colors ranging from green to red predominantly determined by the temperature. The Excelsior Geyser pool discharges 15000–17000 liter of hot water per minute with a temperature of 93 °C directly into the Firehole River. In the late 19th century it was an active geyser that erupted frequently. Most eruptions were about 33 meters high, although some exceeded 90 meters in both height and width. It is believed that the powerful eruptions damaged its internal plumbing system, and it now boils as a productive hot spring most of the time.
