A signpost of towns on the three day road to Tawang in northern Arunachal Pradesh, India.

A signpost marking the towns flanking the road to Tawang, a remote Himalayan valley and former kingdom which is a three day drive from the nearest airport in Assam. The signpost also marks the site of the Sino-Indian war of 1962, when China, disputing the Simla Accord of 1914 when Tawang Valley, a former Tibetan Kingdom that was signed over to British- run India, briefly invaded India. Tawang is now a part of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, a fact still fiercely disputed by China who do not recognise the Simla Accord and maintain that Tawang is part of South Tibet. The Dalai Lama fled to Tawang when escaping the Chinese Army in 1959.
