The peat briquette was Ireland's answer to fuel shortages in the wake of World War 2and in time, with mechanisation, it became available to homes nationwide. ... At one point it was producing 280 million briquettes annually - if they were laid end-to-end they would have stretched around the world twice! Bord na Móna said it will continue to manufacture peat briquettes well into 2024. Until then, "the focus will be on investing in and developing a wider range of sustainable home heating products for our customers who look to us to supply them with quality Irish solid fuel products”.
