Strawberry Guava, Cattley Guava or Peruvian Guava, Psidium littorale var cattleianum syn Psidium cattleianum, Myrtaceae, Brazil

Strawberry Guava, Cattley Guava or Peruvian Guava, Psidium littorale var cattleianum syn Psidium cattleianum, Myrtaceae, native to the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Edible juicy dark red fruit tasting like strawberries. It grows to about 6 metres high and has dark green leaves, creamy white flowers, and distinctive red bark. It is an invasive species that has been introduced to many other areas where it is now causing problems. It is a serious threat to the natural habitat on all six Hawaiian islands and elsewhere. The fruit can be eaten by cutting them in half and scooping out the pulp and seeds. The seeds are small and white in colour and can be roasted as a substitute for coffee. Its leaves may be brewed for tea.
