'Les Incroyables', a dotted engraving by Jean Louis Darcis Carle Vernet from 1796, were wealthy young men after the French Revolution with exaggerated dress luxurious excesses of the old regime denounced. A true 'incroyable' wore long straggly hair, gold earrings, wide lapels, a high collar with a high knotted neckerchief, shoes with pointed noses and a gnarled cane.
