Cottonwood Trees, Zion Canyon

Zion is an ancient Hebrew word meaning a place of refuge or sanctuary and the Mormans referred to it as "the Heavenly City Of God".Approximately 8,000years ago the first small family groups of Native Americans arrived to settle here. The ‘Parowan Eremont’ lived in the area also but both groups had moved away by 1300. Replacing them were the Parravits and other Pairute sub tribes. Mormons discovered the canyon in 1858 and groups of them had settled by the early 1860s.
