A 1920's magazine illustration showing a Dandy Horse, credited as the 1st bicycle . The term Dandy Horse was a derogatory one, indicating that only rich 'Dandies' could afford the early machines. It was otherwise known as a hobby horse, laufmaschine (running machine), velocipede ,draisienne, draisine, and pedestrian curricle and gave way to the development of the modern bicycle. Early forms were powered by the riders feet. Karl Drais who invented the first running machine was inspired to develop it following the death of thousands of horse after the eruption of Mount Tambora (1816)
