Juno, the warlike Roman goddess, as depicted in 'Earth under the Protection of Jupiter and Juno', c. 1520-30, a tapestry of gold, silver, silk and wool. From one of three extant panels of a series known as 'The Spheres'. The tapestries were woven for King John III of Portugal (born 1502, enthroned 1521, died 1557) and his wife, Catherine of Austria (born 1507, died 1578), a member of the Hapsburg family.
