American black bear (Ursus americanus), chocolate phase, in balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera), Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. This bear spent considerable time chewing through several large branches until they broke and fell to the ground. Then the bear climbed down the tree and proceeded to eat the seed pods that were beyond reach while the branches remained attached to the tree. The fur of black bears can range from black to brown or cinnamon to blonde to white.
