Valvisciolo abbey,the cloister.

Valvisciolo abbey is located in the province of Latina, including Sermoneta, the Oasis of Ninfa and Latina Scalo. Built in strict Romanesque-Cistercian is one of the greatest masterpieces of the genre of the province after the Abbey of Fossanova. Tradition has it that this abbey was founded in the twelfth century by Greek monks and has been restored and occupied by the Templars in the thirteenth century. When in the fourteenth century this order was dissolved were replaced by the Cistercians. In this abbey it is linked to a medieval legend, where it is said that in 1314, when it was put to the stake the last Templar Grand Master, Jacques de Molay the lintels of the churches were split. Even today, observing the lintel of the main portal of the abbey, you can see a crack. Clues to the presence Templar crosses are made up some characteristics: first large step in the floor of the church, in the ceiling of the cloister and the most famous of all carved in the left eye of the central rose window, came to light during the restoration of the century. In recent times, on the western side of the cloister, knocking down a false wall, came to light, scratched on the plaster original, the five famous words of magical palindrome: SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS, with the difference, so far unique, that twenty-five letters are arranged in five concentric circular rings, each of which is divided into five sectors, so as to form a shape similar to a target. read more :
