An old engraving of a Victorian or a rail-freight tipper wagon in the 1800s. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The uncoupled wagon, shunted to the end of an elevated track, is being tipped by a hydraulic ram or pump in order to discharge its load of coal. Freight could be tipped endways (as here) or sideways. Later rotary dumpers or tippers became popular, as in the early 1900s a system was devised that permitted these wagons to dump their load without uncoupling them from a train.
