Ill SAVAGE MALAYS OF SELANGOR -ji This simpler form of wedding (as practised by theBesisi of Sepang in Selangor) was celebrated in thefollowing manner:—In the first place, the bridegroomwould bring to the house of the brides parents thepresents required by custom—say five cubits of whitecloth, five quids of betel-leaf, five cigarettes, and acopper ring. On the bridegrooms arrival all present partook offood, and the bride and bridegroom then ate rice offthe same plate. After this meal the gifts werepresented to the brides parents, and the Batin orone of the minor chiefs of the tribe { the Penghulu Balei ) then inquired : What aboutthese children of ours} Are we to make themone ? To this the parents replied in the affirmative, and the head of the tribe then gave both bride andbridegroom a new name. The parties might then disperse at leisure. The really remarkable rite called the ant-heap (properly the hillock or mound ) ceremony, re-ferred to above by Mr. J. A. G. Cam
