A White Egret assumes an artistic sinuous pose as it reaches back to clean its aigrettes with its long flexible neck. Many species of birds are just beautiful to watch just going about being themselves. I refer to these often balletic poses and body positions as Living Artistry. Audubon's artistic skills so perfectly captured the sinuous nature of the living movement of herons and egrets, that it is a thrill to observe what he saw so many years ago. Watching them is like looking through a time portal to Audubon's time of observation and exploration. In this image the egret is preening its ornamental back plumes with one wing dropped down a bit.
