Maximilian Before His Death
Maximilian was emperor of Mexico from 1864 to 1867. When Mexican conservatives sought the aid of Napoleon III in founding a Mexican Empire, they persuaded Maximilian to accept the crown of emperor. When Napoleon withdrew his soldiers from Mexico, Maximilian took command but was soon taken prisoner and then shot. This painting by the French Academic artist Jean Paul Laurens (1838-1921) shows Maximilian comforting a member of the clergy who had been sent to comfort him before his execution. The painting hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
