In this section, as elsewhere throughout the Valley of Mexico,native villages still bear names recorded by Cortez 400 years Xochimilco and Chalco narrow gardens or chinampas, made oflake mud piled on reed mats, still produce the vegetables and flowerssold in city markets. From Mexico a modern highway follows the old causeway north-ward to Tepeyac, where an Aztec temple to the goddess of Earth andCorn was later replaced by a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe, PatronSaint of the Republic.
