Kauri is a coniferous tree of Araucariaceae in the genus Agathis native to the northern region of New Zealand's north island. Te Matua Ngahere or "Father of the Forest" is the second largest living kauri tree in the world. Estimated to exceed 2000 years old its trunk has a diameter of 5,34 meters and a girth of 16,77 meters at 1,37 meters height. Total height was 37,4 meters before in winter 2007 a storm damaged the tree and shortened it to 29,9 meters. Die Kauri-Bäume aus der Araukariengruppe wachsen ausschließlich im Norden der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Te Matua Ngahere oder der "Vater des Waldes" ist der zweitgrößte lebende Kauri-Baum auf der Erde. Sein Alter wird auf mehr als 2000 Jahre geschätzt, sein Stamm hat in 1,37 Metern Höhe einen Durchmesser von 5,34 Meter und einen Umfang von 16,77 Metern. Insgesamt war er 37,4 Meter hoch, bevor 2007 ein Wintersturm den Leitast kappte. Heute ist er nur noch 29,90 Meter hoch.
