The Indians who besieged the fort were estimated at from:]S0 to 500 warriors, led on by the notorious Simon Girty. The garrisonnumbered only 42 fighting men, under the command of Col. Shepherd. Thesavages made several attempts to force themselves into the fort; they weredriven back by the unerring rifle shots of the brave little garrison. A rein-forcement of about 50
