Carving depicting an ecclesiastical figure on a capital supporting one of the arched windows on the eastern facade of St Sophia. Atop the fortified rock of Monemvasia are the ruins of the upper town. The only building still standing in remarkably solid condition is the beautiful church of Ayia Sophia. A fortified wall also defines the seaside town of Monemvasia which was founded in the 6th century and became the medieval seaport and commercial centre of Byzantine Peloponnese.
