CCP 1 / USSR 1 1934 . An old Press photo of the Russian record-breaking stratosphere balloon (passenger compartment) which ascended to miles setting a record for a hydrogen-filled balloon. Its commander was Georgy Prokofiev (1902-1939). The crew consisted of Prokofiev, Konstantin Godunov and co-pilot Ernst Birnbaum. The Soviet Air Forces high-altitude balloon with a crew of three performed scientific studies of the Earth's stratosphere. Another, Osoaviakhim-1, later crashed on descent ,killing three people.
