Winter scene at the imposing brick building of Herstmonceux Castle in the County of East Sussex, England.

The present castle dates from 1440 and was developed from an older building on the site. The castle was built as a residence rather than a defensive structure. It had a checkered history until it fell into disrepair and was part dismantled in 1771, leaving a picturesque ruin. Restoration began in 1913 and was completed in 1933. The grounds housed the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1957 - 1988. In 1992 after further renovation it became the Canadian owned Queen's International Study centre. As well as the students housed there the castle is tioday used for mant public events, festivals, weddings etc.
