Humboldt's Route on the Orinoco, 1800. Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a German polymath, geographer, naturalist and explorer. In February 1800, Humboldt explored the course of the Orinoco River and its tributaries. This trip, which lasted four months and covered 1,725 miles (2,776 km), had an aim of establishing the existence of the Casiquiare canal.
