The crater Tsiolkovsky on the far side of the moon, photographed from the Apollo 13 mission on 14 April 1970. Crater Tsiolkovsky was formed during intense bombardment of the lunar surface around 4 billion years ago. The floor of the crater is covered by a dark basaltic lava. Crater Tsiolkovsky is in the south-east region of the far side, approximately at and The Apollo 13 mission was launched on 11th April 1970, returning on 17th April 1970 after the lunar landing was aborted due to a suspected explosion of an oxygen tank.
