Worcester Association of Mutual Aid in Detecting Thieves.—The constables of early days were not paid salaries, nor were they traineddetectives. Horse stealing became a great annoyance to the farmersand many towns formed societies to suppress it. In this town the societywas organized to detect and pimish all forms of thievery, and for manyyears gave efficient aid to the constables. The leading citizens of thetown were members. It was organized Nov. 16, 1795. After a regularpolice force was formed the activity of the society ceased, but for social AND ITS PEOPLE 457 purposes and on account of the early history, the members have main-tained the organization to the present.
