Winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) opening on a cold day.

In many parts of Europe, Asia, and North America, winter aconite is one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. Once flowers have bloomed, they can open and close on a daily basis in response to temperature shifts. On cold mornings (top), flowers are closed and leaves curled. As the temperature rises, leaves open (center), and eventually flowers open (bottom).
