Spain, Graus - Basilica of Virgen de la Pena

Graus is a village in the Spanish province of Huesca, located in the Pyrenees. The Battle of Graus took place here, and Spanish philosopher Baltasar Gracian y Morales was exiled here. During the Spanish Civil War, the village of Graus served as a fairly important local commercial center with 2,600 inhabitants around 1936. It was a libertarian stronghold and a center of collectivization at that time. The basilica of Virgen de la Pena was constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries, starting in 1538. It has a Renaissance facade, decorated with reliefs and the shields of the village of Graus, and a graceful cloister that offers a great view of the valleys of the Esera and Isabena.
