After having been abandoned for many years, San Lucas Island is being transformed, with the help of Raleigh International, into a cultural site. Interest in the island's old prison is largely due to a famous book first published in 1960 called 'The Lonely Men's Island' which was written by one of its inmates, Jose Leon Sanchez, about his experiences there.
